Making a Difference

Cronfa Glyndŵr (the Glyndŵr Trust) was established in 1963 to promote Welsh-medium education. Until 2004, by responding to applications for assistance from individual parents or group leaders, the Trust assisted many children to attend Welsh-medium schools.

In 2004 the Trust was re-launched and, using local knowledge and through working with RHAG (Parents for Welsh-medium Education), the emphasis was changed to assisting schools to run local campaigns to attract more pupils to Welsh-medium education.

With assistance from Cronfa Glyndŵr, the following schools have produced attractive leaflets to distribute in their local communities:

  • Ysgolion Cynradd Cymraeg Login Fach, Bryn Iago a Phontybrenin in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr, Gowerton, Swansea;
  • Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tonyrefail in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari, Llanhari, Rhondda Cynon Taf;

    Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Bronllwyn in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda, Porth, Rhondda Cynon Taf;

    Ysgol y Fenni, Abergavenny, and Ysgol y Ffin, Chepstow, in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, Pontypool, Torfaen;

    Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Rhyd-y-grug in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf;

    Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Castellau in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen / Gartholwg, Church Village, Rhondda Cynon Taf;

    Cylchoedd Meithrin Caerffili – 14 Cylch, each pamphlet ‘customised’! – in the catchment area of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Blackwood, Caerffili.

    • There is evidence that these leaflets have succeeded in making a difference by raising awareness of the benefits of Welsh-medium education, resulting in increased up-take.

      Although the main focus is now on such ‘campaigns’, the Trust is still able to respond to applications of the ‘old’ type. How could we reject a desperate appeal from Cylch Meithrin Cilfynydd, which was on the point of closing down? A timely donation helped them to survive until more children joined the group and their own funds increased.
      Similar donations have been made to Cylch Meithrin Efail Isaf and Cylch Meithrin Blaendulais.
